Hand colored print. Shows rivers, Native American settlements, and mountains. Covers from what is roughly modern-day North Carolina south to Mexico. Shows the Bahamas off the coast of Florida.
Historical Note
This map was drawn by Geronimo de Chaves (c.1523-1574) , a Royal Cosmographer to Philip II of Spain , for publication in Abraham Orelius ' (1527-1598) atlas , Theatrum Orbis Terrarum . The map first appeared in the 1584 Latin edition of the atlas and the unaltered plate appeared in all subsequent editions until 1612 . This is one of the most important early maps of Southeastern America . It reflects names of Native American towns and other details of the interior , probably obtained from reports of the Hernando DeSoto expedition .
Bibliographic Note
This map was formerly classified as 33-MAP-0-2 .
