Print, mounted on linen. This map of New River Inlet was prepared by the U.S. Coast Survey under the direction of Frank Manly Thorn (1836-1889) as superintendent and issued in October 1888. Surveys were conducted between 1851 and 1888 by A. S. Wadsworth, John Mechan, William Candler Hodgkins, W. H. Brownson, and John Newland Maffitt. The map portrays the inlet and the surrounding areas of Chadwick Bay, Howards Bay, Sallier's Bay, Wilsons Bay, and the New River at its juncture with the inlet. Soundings are given and information relating to the soundings and tides is found in text appearing in the lower right corner. Shows oyster beds off of Chadwick's Bay. Inland detail includes cities and towns, land cover, and houses.
