Print. This map was published in November 1889 under the direction of Superintendent Thomas Corwin Mendenhall (1841-1924). The triangulation was executed by A. S. Wadsworth, D. B. Wainwright, and W. C. Hodgkins between 1854 and 1888; topography by J. Mechan, A. S. Wadsworth, H. Adams, C. M Bache, and D. B. Wainwright between 1856 and 1880; and hydrography by A. Murray, E. B. Thomas, R. Platt, and W. C. Hodgkins between 1858 and 1888. Astronomical observations were made by D. B. Wainwright and W. C. Hodgkins. The reduced drawings were made by P. Erichsen and C. Junken; and the map was engraved by R. F. Bartle, E. A. Maedel, H. T. Knight, J. P. Cox, and H. C. Evans. It portrays the coastline of North Carolina from Bogue Inlet to Old Topsail Inlet. Topographical features, roads, locations of structures, and other landmarks are shown. Soundings are given, and the depth of the water is also indicated by shading. Information relating to the soundings, aids to navigation, and tides is found at the bottom center of the map. Includes notes on authorities, buoys, abbreviations, and office work. |
