The counties of the state are delineated and named and either outlined in a single color or washed in several. Mountains and foothills are depicted in relief by hachures. Other topographical features shown include swamps and wetlands, rivers and creeks, and lakes and other large bodies of water. The locations of county towns and courthouses and other municipalities are shown, as are the routes of the proposed Wilmington and Weldon and Raleigh and Gaston railroads. Parts of surrounding states are included. Longitude is measured from Washington.
