Print. This map was prepared by R. W. Stone of the United States Geological Survey to accompany his report on the Dan River coal field published as Economic Paper No. 34. The map was reprinted in and extracted from Mining Industry in North Carolina during 1911-12 by Joseph Hyde Pratt, state geologist (1914). It portrays an area on both sides of the Dan River in Stokes and Rockingham counties from Germanton to Spray and shows the course of the river and the geology of the area. Roads, railroads, bridges, mills, and other landmarks are shown; and the residences of some individuals are identified. A legend in the upper left corner explains the symbols used on the map.
