Hand colored print. This map was prepared by George Woolworth Colton (1827-1901) and published in and extracted from the February 8, 1862 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. It portrays the eastern one-third of North Carolina and a portion of southeastern Virginia and shows cities and towns, railroads, major roads, and rivers and other waterways. Forts and other strategic locations are also noted. An alternative title appears at the bottom of the map below the neatline: Map of a part of Virginia and North Carolina, from Fortress Monroe to Wilmington, including Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, and the inlets, rivers and railway approaches to Norfolk, Weldon, Raleigh, Goldsborough and other strategic points. The map was also published without the alternative title in Leslie's Pictorial History of the War of 1861 (New York, 1862).
