Printed. This map was prepared to accompany a report of Major General John Gray Foster (1823-1874) to the congressional Committee on the Conduct of the War. It was printed by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia and published in and extracted from the Supplemental Report of the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War, (Washington, 1866), volume 2. The map portrays Roanoke Island and vicinity at the time of the Battle of Roanoke Island in 1862 and shows the locations of fortifications and the positions of the United States and Confederate naval forces. Notes in the lower left corner report the number of guns at each of the forts on the island and the locations of the landing place of Federal troops, the site of the battle, and the place of the surrender of the Confederates.
