This is the map of the survey conducted by Jonathan Price and Woodson Clements in 1818 to ascertain the feasibility of a canal from the Roanoke River to either the Pamlico or Pungo rivers. This survey was one of many conducted in compliance with a resolution of the General Assembly in 1817 appointing commissioners to "employ a Principal Engineer for the State, and to have sundry surveys made." All the surveys made in 1818 were carried out according to the written instructions of Archibald D. Murphey, as chairman of the commissioners, covering every detail of the work. This map and the report by Price and Clements it accompanies were presented to the General Assembly on December 8, 1818. The map shows the area in Beaufort, Martin, and Washington counties bounded by the Roanoke, Pamlico, and Pungo rivers. Waterways are depicted in considerable detail, names and locations or mills and bridges are noted, and landowners are occasionally identified.
