This is the surviving portion of a manuscript topographical map, only a small part of the title of which remains intact, showing the country between Edenton and the Dismal Swamp Canal. It is probably the map of a survey by Walter Gwynn (1802-1882), in his capacity as a consulting engineer, for a railroad and/or turnpike connecting Edenton to the Dismal Swamp Canal. The map is not dated but was prepared prior to 1839 at which time the name of the post office at New Lebanon was changed to South Mills. Towns and villages, roads, bridges, and other physical landmarks are shown as are the residences of some individuals.
