The Danville, Mocksville and Southwestern Railroad Company was charted in 1880 to construct a rail line connecting North Carolina with the Danville and New River Railroad in Virginia. This map was prepared by H. W. Goodrich, chief engineer of the railroad, and endorsed by the railroad's president, Thomas R. Sharp. It portrays the first section of the railroad in Rockingham County from Leaksville to the connection with the Danville and New River Railroad just inside the Virginia state line on Cascade Creek. Property owners and boundaries along the route are identified and roads, rivers and creeks, and other landmarks are shown. A profile depicting changes in elevation along this section of the railroad appears at the top of the map.
