Abstract	Print, mounted. The map was engraved by John Peter Van Ness Throop and Adolph Maedel. It illustrates the Western Bar Channel and New Inlet entrances to the Cape Fear River, and the courses of navigation from the ocean through the entrances and up river to Smithville (now Southport) and Wilmington respectively are shown as broken lines with bearings being noted. Soundings are given. A sketch of Frying Pan Shoals appears as an inset in the upper left corner. Sailing directions and information regarding lighthouses and beacons, light vessels, tides, and currents is found in text appearing below and to the right of the inset. An explanation of the abbreviations used on the map appears in the lower right corner.
