This map was prepared by Claude Joseph Sauthier (1726-1802). Sauthier had been brought to North Carolina as a surveyor in 1767 by Governor William Tryon. It portrays topographically the location of the Battle of Alamance fought on May 16, 1771 between the militia of North Carolina commanded by Governor Tryon and the Regulators.
The map was originally pasted in and extracted from an order book in the possession of the North Carolina State Archives entitled "Journal of the Expedition against the Insurgents in the Western Frontiers of North Carolina ...."
