Abstract	This map was prepared by the U.S. Coast Survey from a trigonometrical survey conducted under the direction of Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867), Benjamin Peirce (1809-1880), and Carlile Pollock Patterson (1816-1881) as superintendents of the Coast Survey. This is an 1892 printing (presumably with updates) of a map first issued in November 1882 by Superintendent Julius Erasmus Hilgard (1825-1890). The map portrays the coastline of North and South Carolina from Cape Hatteras to Cape Romain. Soundings are given, and the depth of the water is also indicated by shading. Information relating to the soundings, aids to navigation, and the abbreviations used to describe the ocean bottom is found in the upper left of the map. This copy has been annotated to note the locations of lighthouses and light vessels.
