Abstract	This hand-drawn map portrays the course of the Cape Fear and Deep rivers northwest from Fayetteville to Hancock's Mill in Moore County. The dams and locks constructed by the company are shown in red. Bridges, ferries, mills, and other landmarks along the rivers are identified, and the residences of some individuals are noted. Deep River coal fields noted. Haw River, Avents Ferry Road and town of Haywood also featured. The topography on both sides of the rivers is indicated by hachures and other symbols. A profile of the two rivers drawn at scales of 1 mile/0.75 inches (horizontal) and 10 feet/1 inch (vertical) and showing the water level appears as an inset along the bottom of the map.
Historical Note	This map was drawn by Thomas F. O'Brien under the direction of William Beverhout Thompson as chief engineer of the Cape Fear and Deep River Navigation Company. This company was chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly to improve navigation of the Cape Fear and Deep rivers above Fayetteville with the particular aim of exploiting the coal resources in Chatham County, and the state held a substantial amount of stock in the company. The map probably accompanied one of the company's annual reports to the state.
