Notes |
Shortly after the United States entered World War I in April, 1917, a U.S. Army training camp was established on farmland two miles southwest of Charlotte. The city was selected because of its combination of available land, an adequate water supply, access to improved roads and railroads, and a mild climate. Twelve thousand wooden buildings and many tents were quickly put up, and the camp, named after a prominent American Revolutionary War general, Nathanael Greene, was opened within three months. The first waves of recruits were primarily from Massachusetts and other New England states, with most North Carolina soldiers being sent to camps in South Carolina. As many as 50,000 soldiers lived and trained at Camp Greene at a time. During the influenza epidemic in the autumn of 1918, more than 4000 cases were diagnosed, and more than 400 soldiers died. Healthy soldiers were sent overseas, and the camp quickly emptied out. The camp was demolished during the winter of 1919. |
