Manigault plantation journalManigault plantation journalPlantation owners; Plantations; Fugitive slaves; Slaves; Slavery; Rice plantations; Agriculture;Plantation record book, 1833-1879, kept by Louis Manigault and containing information on the three major Manigault plantations: Silk Hope, at the head of the Cooper River in Berkeley District, S.C., and Gowrie and East Hermitage on Argyle Island in the Savannah River, Ga., several miles upstream from the port of Savannah. The journal contains slave records listing names of slaves, including a photograph of a runaway slave, and planting records. During and after the Civil War, records chiefly relate to crops planted at Gowrie Plantation. The journal also includes entries describing Louis Manigault's travels to Europe and China.
