Color print. This map accompanied a letter and project of Major General Quincy Adams Gillmore (1825-1888) of the United States Army dated September 6, 1864 to the Army Chief of Staff. The map was engraved and printed by Julius Bien & Co. of New York and published in and extracted from the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (Washington: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1891-1895). It portrays Smith Island and the entrances to the Cape Fear River and shows the locations of the Confederate forts and fortifications. A manuscript notation by General Gillmore states "this is an old chart & the Soundings are not very correct."
