Historical Notes | In North Carolina’s issues dated 1861, the lowest denomination in that currency is five cents; the highest, only two dollars. This is one of the 1861 two-dollar notes printed for North Carolina by the firm of F. W. Bornemann in Charleston, South Carolina. According to disbursement records of North Carolina Comptroller Curtis H. Brogden, the state paid Bornemann $500 in March 1862 for that firm’s work in “engraving plates and printing $2 Treasury Notes of North Carolina.” |

Bornemann in Charleston, South Carolina; black ink with location and date “Raleigh, Oct[ober]. 2nd, 1861.” printed in lower right, “TWO” in all corners, large “2” in upper right and another “2” within wreath-bordered medallion in lower left, no vignettes but oblong border decorations with floral and geometric elements at both ends; stylized plate letter “C” in upper left below handwritten serial number “7830,” signed by “Henry Hardie” for the public treasurer at center near bottom edge. |
