Title | North Carolina one-dollar treasury note, 1861 |
Creator | North Carolina. Treasurer. |
Date | October 13, 1861 |
Description | One-dollar 1861 treasury note issued by the State of North Carolina |
Historical Notes | This dollar note cites the issue location and date "Raleigh, Oct[ober]. 13th, 1861." along its bottom edge. In its overall appearance, this paper dollar closely resembles notes of the same denomination that carry earlier dates in October 1861. Those preceding varieties feature the same image of the Roman goddess Minerva in the same location. At their centers, however, the earlier notes are decorated with a vignette of a dog guarding a key to a moneybox. On this note a small sailing ship, a ketch, has replaced that canine-related image. See specimen CK56.4128 for a comparison. |
