| Description | Five-dollar bill of credit engraged vy William Tisdale of New Bern and issued in 1775. |
| Historical Notes | Although this 1775 bill is damaged, with a portion of its center missing, it retains an intact vignette of the Georgian-style "palace" designed by English architect John Hawks and built for Royal Governor William Tryon in New Bern between 1767 and 1770. William Tisdale, a silversmith in New Bern, engraved this image and designed the other printing plates for North Carolina's 1775 issue. It is noteworthy that this is the earliest depiction of Tryon Palace used on a publicly circulated document or imprint. |
