Historical Notes | There are three different versions of a ten-dollar bill in the 1778 authorization. Those versions are distinguished by different mottoes inscribed on the bills' lower-left corners. This particular specimen carries the prophetical observation "Persecution the Ruin of Empires." |

Transcription | NORTH CAROLINA CURRENCY TEN DOLLARS. No STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA. THIS BILL intitles the Bearer to receive TEN Spanish milled DOLLARS, or the Value thereof in Gold or Silver, agreeable to an Act of Assembly passed at Hillsborough the eighth Day of August, 1778. |
