Title | Ten-dollar bill of credit, 1779 |
Creator | North Carolina. General Assembly (Smithfield, N.C.) |
Date | May 15, 1779 |
Description | Ten-dollar bill of credit, printed by Hugh Walker in Wilmington and issued in 1779 |
Historical Notes | As a counterfeit-detection measure, the printer Hugh Walker added small telltale marks to bills in the 1779 issue. Note the little dash over the "y" in the word "Assembly." North Carolina officials hoped that counterfeiters would overlook such tiny marks when they printed fake bills. Unfortunately, keen-eyed counterfeiters copied them as well. |
