Title | Two-hundred-fifty-dollar bill of credit, 1779 |
Creator | North Carolina. General Assembly (Smithfield, N.C.) |
Date | May 15, 1779 |
Description | Two-hundred-fifty-dollar bill of credit issued in 1779 and printed by Hugh Walker in Wilmington, N.C. |
Historical Notes | This is the largest denomination in the North Carolina’s 1779 issue. Owing to its high face value, this bill has two counterfeit-detection marks. One is the small caret or circumflex over the “e” in “Silver”; the other is the dash over the “i” in “Smithfield.” With regard to the signatures on this specimen, John Taylor’s autograph remains quite bold, while John Hunt’s has faded and almost completely disappeared. |
