Title | Two-hundred-fifty-dollar bill of credit, 1780 |
Creator | North Carolina. General Assembly (New Bern, N.C.) |
Date | May 10, 1780 |
Description | Two-hundred-fifty-dollar bill of credit printed by James Davis in New Bern and issued in 1780 at New Bern. |
Historical Notes | Printing currency during the Revolution proved to be especially difficult for North Carolina, which was generally viewed by other states as having a poor economy and a highly unstable monetary structure. With few assets in hand to secure loans and lacking specie (coins), North Carolina's government had no real ability to honor its promise to pay the "Bearer" of this bill its face value in either "Spanish milled dollars" or in other forms of silver and gold. |
