Title | Ten-shilling treasury note, 1758 |
Creator | North Carolina. Colonial Assembly. |
Date | May 4, 1758 |
Description | Ten shilling treasury note issued in New Bern in 1758. |
Historical Notes | This note’s backside records the signatures of some of the people who used it in transactions. When accepting paper money from someone in the 1700s, it was common practice to have that person sign the reverse. The signature served as a measure of guarantee that the currency was genuine. It also documented who had passed the note and provided an evidentiary trail if it were subsequently identified as counterfeit. |
