Description | Five-shilling bill of credit issued at New Bern, North Carolina in 1761. |
Historical Notes | One of this bill’s four signatories (top right) was Lewis De Rosset. A native of France, De Rosset immigrated to North Carolina with his parents in the late 1720s. He became a wealthy planter in New Hanover County and served in many local and provincial offices. In 1779, due to his loyalist sympathies during the Revolution, his properties were confiscated, and he fled North Carolina. De Rosset died in London in 1786. |
