Title | One-shilling bill of credit, 1761 |
Creator | North Carolina. Colonial Assembly. |
Date | April 23, 1761 |
Description | One-shilling bill of credit issued at New Bern, North Carolina in 1761. |
Historical Notes | In the British monetary system, a “d” represents a penny; an “s,” a shilling; and an “l” (or “£”), a pound. The “12 d” along the left side and bottom edge of this ragged bill confirms this specimen’s denomination. In the old duodecimal system, twelve pence was equal to one shilling. Therefore, the “12 d” and “1 s” on this bill denote the same value. |
