Title | Twenty-dollar bill of credit, 1779 |
Creator | North Carolina. General Assembly (Smithfield, N.C.) |
Date | May 15, 1779 |
Description | Twenty-dollar bill of credit issued in 1770 and printed by Hugh Walker in Wilmington, N.C. |
Historical Notes | The motto on this bill expresses the sentiment of many Americans in 1779. In lieu of full independence from Great Britain, a significant portion of the population, even late in the war, remained receptive to a negotiated peace settlement, one with "Honourable Terms" that recognized Americans as having the same civil protections and rights of representation as citizens in England. |
