Title | Fifty-dollar bill of credit, 1778 |
Creator | North Carolina. General Assembly (Hillsborough, N.C.) |
Date | August 8, 1778 |
Description | Fifty-dollar bill of credit issued in 1778 and printed by James Davis in New Bern, North Carolina. |
Historical Notes | During the Revolution, the face values of North Carolina currency were expressed in dollars instead of the British values of pence, shillings, and pounds. At war's end, however, due to the poor reputation gained by the dollar during the conflict, North Carolina and many of her sister states reverted, at least temporarily, to using the old colonial duodecimal system. |
