Title | Five-dollar bill of credit, 1776 |
Creator | North Carolina. Treasurer. |
Date | April 2, 1776 |
Description | Five-dollar bill of credit issued in 1776 and printed from plate likely engraved by Gabriel Lewyn of Baltimore, Maryland. |
Historical Notes | Due to the spotting on its breast, the bird represented on this bill has been identified as a wood thrush (Hylocichla mustelina). Today, the highest concentrations of this species in the United States are found in the Appalachian chain, although in the bird's breeding season its range extends from as far northward as eastern Canada and southward to northern Florida and across to Texas. |
