Title | Five-dollar bill of credit, 1776 |
Creator | North Carolina. Provincial Congress (Halifax, N.C.) |
Date | April 2, 1776 |
Description | Five-dollar bill of credit issued in 1776 and printed from plate likely engraved by Gabriel Lewyn of Baltimore, Maryland. |
Historical Notes | Mythological gods and creatures have long been popular subjects on currency. The figure on this 1776 bill is Triton, a god of water and the sea. In Greek mythology, Triton is the son of the god Poseidon and Amphitrite. Holding a three-prong spear called a trident, he is depicted as half man and half fish, a "merman" wearing a crown. |
