Description	Three-dollar bill of credit issued in 1776 and printed from plate likely engraved by Gabriel Lewyn of Baltimore, Marlyand.
Historical Notes	This is the only bill in the 1776 issue that is decorated with two different species, an American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and a beaver (Castor canadensis). After being hunted to near extinction, both animals thrive today in various locations in North Carolina. The beaver's survival in this state is due largely to restocking programs carried out in the 1930s and 1940s, when North Carolina officials repopulated areas with supplies of the animal obtained from Pennsylvania and other outside sources.
