Title | Twenty-shilling bill of credit, period counterfeit, 1785 |
Creator | North Carolina. Treasurer. |
Date | December 29, 1785 |
Description | Twenty-shilling bill of credit, period counterfeit, printed by Thomas Davis and issued in 1785. |
Historical Notes | The heavily circulated condition of this ten-shilling bill, its reinforced stitching at the center, and the transaction signatures on a fragment of newspaper affixed to its back provide evidence that this piece of currency was used extensively before someone with the initials "WHH" detected that it was bogus and wrote "Counterfeit" on its face. The paper on the back lists a variety of popular, widely advertised eighteenth-century patent medicines, such as "Fraunce's female strengthening elixir" "Dr. Radcliffe's famous purging elixir" and "Dr. Stoughton's great stomach elixir." |
