Project description | Interviews, 1990-1998, conducted by Frances Weaver with Henry Toole Clark Jr. about his life and career. Clark was the first Administrator of Health Affairs at the University of North Carolina. During his tenure, the University's Division of Health Affairs grew to be one of the major university medical centers in the United States. Topics include Clark's childhood, education, years as a tuberculosis patient, positions before coming to the University of North Carolina, and community leadership in Chapel Hill, N.C. |

Abstract | Tape 5, Side A This tape begins with Clark's discussion of his adjustment to his transition to Vanderbilt including both the liabilities and the assets of the move. He mentions the problems that he found upon his arrival at Vanderbilt such as the financial difficulties he had to face as well as the outdated equipment. THere is extensive discussion about what had led to these problems and how he tried to remedy them. He discusses the new polio ward that he opened under advice from Dr. Amos Christie and how the press coverage of this center assisted in improving the overall morale for the hospitol staff. Tape 5, Side B This side begins with extensive discussion of the changes Clark tried to make at Vanderbilt and the highlights of his first two years there. He concludes this tape with some discussion of his main accomplishments during his time at Vanderbilt and the lessons he learned while there. Tape 6, Side A This tape continues Clark's ideas of the lessons he learned during his time at Vanderbilt. He mentions Mr. Connell, the former superintendent of Vanderbilt Hospitol. The interview concludes with Clark's decision to leave Vanderbilt to go to Chapel Hill and how he views his experiences at Vanderbilt now. |
