K.2.13. Southern Communities: Listening for a Change: Voices after the Deluge, the Great North Carolina Flood |
Project description | Interviews, 1999-2003, with flood victims, rescue workers, relief workers, ministers, farmers, farm workers, small-business owners, environmental monitors, and political leaders in eastern North Carolina about the devastating flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Topics include the toll of the flood on human lives; disruptions to community and sense of place; political response to the disaster at local, state, and national levels; public health and environmental issues; the effect of the disaster on the region's most vulnerable residents; and the experiences of relief workers. Some interviewees offer parallels between the hurricane and other tragedies, particularly 9/11. |

Abstract | The interview begins with a long conversation about farm history in the area and on the King's farm in particular. There is an interesting piece about the tobacco program. Also included are strawberry production, African American farm hands, and the rise of contract poultry in the area. After establishing farm, community, and family history we move to the flood itself, discussing both the movement of water and how they and their property were directly affected. The final two tapes contain narratives about the farm as seen from a windshield tour. At several points we exit the truck and get a closer look at equipment, barns, the old home place, and later the Unitarian mission school built by missionaries from Massachusetts. Later we visit the fire tower where Mr. King worked part time. |
