Project description | Interviews, 2011-2012, conducted for the Breaking New Ground: A History of American Farm Owners Since the Civil War project. This project was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and was coordinated by Adrienne Petty (of the City College of New York) and Mark Schultz (of Lewis University in Illinois) with assistance from Jacquelyn Hall. Interviews were conducted by two cohorts of research fellows and centered on African American farmers', landowners', and descendants' political, social, and economic experiences in the American South from the Civil War onward. |

Abstract | This interview was organized around black land ownership and its effects on Mr. Harry K. Holt. Mr. Holt a variety of things such as: family history; his own personal history; everyday life on the farm; chores he and his siblings had to do, friends and relatives in the community; hog killing; gathering crops; churning butter; working tobacco fields for money; the difference in pay from land owners and share croppers; the role his parent's plaid in the church; church in general; education of his parents and what it meant to them; his education and siblings education; race relationships; class relationships; his father's home brew; what the land meant to him and his family. |
