Project description | Interviews, 2011-2012, conducted for the Breaking New Ground: A History of American Farm Owners Since the Civil War project. This project was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and was coordinated by Adrienne Petty (of the City College of New York) and Mark Schultz (of Lewis University in Illinois) with assistance from Jacquelyn Hall. Interviews were conducted by two cohorts of research fellows and centered on African American farmers', landowners', and descendants' political, social, and economic experiences in the American South from the Civil War onward. |

Abstract | The main theme of the interview revolves around Mr. Walker's memories of the Pinhook community in rural Mississippi County, Missouri between 1941 and 1949 – descriptions of the landscape, neighboring farmers, and community institutions. Topics include: Migration from TN to Southeast MO, St. Louis, MO, and Detroit, MI; Flooding; Cleo Wright lynching in 1942 (Sikeston, MO); small African American farm ownership and the transition to large farming; Country stores; Rural schools; Leisure activities; Christian Era Association; Christian Liberty District Association; Relationship to gins; NAACP; Politics; Exclusion of African Americans from government assistance. |
