Project description | Interviews, 2007-ongoing, focus on issues related to Latin American immigration to North Carolina and the formation of Latino communities. Interviewers are conducted by undergraduate students in courses taught by Hannah Gill at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Interviewees include immigrants, United States-born second generations, professionals who work with immigrants, policy-makers, religious leaders, educators, students, and local business owners. |

Abstract | Rodolfo Toledano García discusses machismo in Latin American culture with respect to food. He talks about stereotypes regarding the role of Latina women in the kitchen and believes it is important to work towards eradicating machismo globally. He narrates about his childhood, the traditions of his grandmother and mother, and how to preserve food with traditional methods in order to combat moments of scarcity. In the interview, he describes different traditional Mexican dishes and how to make some of his favorites. He shows us how his culinary seasoning has evolved in a positive manner due to the different cultures encountered in the United States. His appreciation towards diversity and the opportunity to be able to live in the United States is evident throughout the interview. |
