Project description | Interviews, 2007-ongoing, focus on issues related to Latin American immigration to North Carolina and the formation of Latino communities. Interviewers are conducted by undergraduate students in courses taught by Hannah Gill at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Interviewees include immigrants, United States-born second generations, professionals who work with immigrants, policy-makers, religious leaders, educators, students, and local business owners. |

Abstract | Ruben Martinez is an immigrant from San Luis Potosi, Mexico who is currently living in Durham, North Carolina. Martinez migrated from his hometown when he was sixteen years old in order to earn a higher wage than what he could make in Mexico. He had finished the equivalent of high school in Mexico but was unable to continue his education at a university due to financial difficulties. Before moving to Durham, Martinez worked in a lumber yard in Mississippi for five years. The interview was focused on revealing the causes and differences between perceptions of gender roles between the United States and the interviewee's community in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. |
