Abstract | Leonor Guijón is an immigrant from a small rancho called San Pablo Pejo in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. San Pablo Pejo is a farming town where most of the men travel frequently between the United States and Mexico to earn a living for their families. Guijón left school at the sixth level of elementary school because she felt she was a burden on her parents who had to care for many children. Her family moved to Dalton, Georgia when Guijón was twenty-two. All of her siblings attended at least high school in the United States. Guijón has four children who attend school in Mebane. Guijón is taking English classes through the Orange County Literacy Council. The interview begins with a discussion of Guijón's life in Mexico and what she liked and disliked about it. She describes the town of San Pablo Pejo, the effects of migration and the cultural celebrations of the town. Guijón closes with comments about her relationship with her family and how her family changed when they moved to the United States. |
