Title | Ten-dollar bill of credit, 1776 |
Creator | North Carolina. Provincial Congress (Halifax, N.C.) |
Date | April 2, 1776 |
Description | Ten-dollar bill of credit issued in 1776 and printed from plate likely engraved by Gabriel Lewyn of Baltimore, Maryland. |
Historical Notes | Throughout history, the peacock has represented different qualities in many cultures: beauty, dignity, self-confidence, and even hubris. In early Christian iconography, the bird symbolized immortality and incorruptibility. Perhaps the latter virtue is what North Carolina officials had in mind when they approved the use of the peacock's image on this piece of currency. |
