Project description | Interviews, 1985-2014, conducted by Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel members as part of the Cary Heritage Museum's Oral History Project. Interviewees include members of prominent families, a former mayor, former sharecropping families, long-time community merchants, a retired chief of police and a fire chief, and former Page-Walker Hotel owners, all of whom discuss topics relating to the character and development of the town. |

Abstract | Mr. Thorne was born in New York, and moved to Cary when he was in high school. After graduating from Boughton High and attending some college, he was drafted into the Marines. He then went into graphic design and advertising, living in Cary, Durham and Wilmington. He also owned and managed several convenience store chains. In the early 1990s, Doc helped The Friends of the Page-Walker with all their efforts to save the building. Doc ran for several political offices, both in Cary and Wilmington. He has been an active member of many town council committees. He joined the Heart of Cary Association in 2009. As the chair of the membership committee, he greatly increased the number of members. He has also been President for almost three years, during which time the association has launched many projects and offered significant support to downtown merchants and businesses. |
