This map of North and South Carolina is composed of plates 70 and 71 from a ca. 1883 edition of The National Atlas, Containing Elaborate Topographical Maps of the United States and the Dominion of Canada published in Philadelphia by O. W. Gray & Son. A table of Explanations in the lower left hand corner explains the symbols used to indicate places with a population of over 50,000; places with a population of over 10,000; state capitals; county towns; standard gauge railroads; narrow gauge railroads; propose railroads; railroads under construction; and canals. Relief shown by hachures, depths shown by soundings. "Charleston Harbor and its Approaches" is shown as an inset in the lower right hand corner. The Cherokee Nation is shown in the far western part of the state. Longitude is calculated from both Greenwich and Washington. An index of place names is found on the reverse. Railroads shown include the Richmond and Danville Rail Road, the Tennessee & Ohio Rail Road, the Carolina Central Rail Road, the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Rail Road, the Raleigh and Augusta Air-Line Rail Road, the Wilmington & Weldon Rail Road, the Atlantic and North Carolina Rail Road, and the Raleigh and Gaston Rail Road.
