Notes |
Carolina Beach is a North Carolina beach resort community located on Pleasure Island, a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. The town of Carolina Beach was established in 1857. Visitors attracted by the pristine beaches began to appear in greater numbers during the 1880s, using steamboat service from Wilmington and a short two-mile railroad running from the ferry landing on the river across the island to the ocean beaches. The first hotel was built in 1887 and the popular Carolina Beach boardwalk was constructed in the 1930s. Larger hotels, seafood restaurants, and a fishing pier were added later. |
