Notes |
The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation is the only North Carolina native American tribe fully recognized by the federal government. The Eastern Band members are the descendants of the Cherokees who avoided forced relocation to the the western territories in the 1830s. Of the 15,000 registered tribal members, about 8,000 live in the Qualla Boundary territory in southwestern North Carolina, a part of historic Cherokee lands now reserved for the Eastern Band. |
