Notes |
Luther Hodges (1898-1974) was a Virginia native whose family moved to Eden, North Carolina when he was two. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1919. As an employee of one of the Marshall Field and Company textile mills in Eden, he worked his way up to company vice president before retiring to enter politics. In 1952 Hodges was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, and succeeded to the governorship when William B. Umstead died in 1954. Hodges was re-elected Governor in 1956. Known as the "Businessman Governor" Hodges advocated for education and industrial development. Research Triangle Park, one of the largest research and development centers in the world, was established during Hodges' tenure. |
