Notes |
Originally named the Southland Speedway, the Raleigh Speedway, located at what is now the junction of Old Wake Forest Road and the Beltline, opened on July 4, 1952, for an IndyCar race won by Troy Ruttman in front of 16,000 fans. The second superspeedway constructed (Darlington, South Carolina was the first) the oval one-mile asphalt track had a long narrow paperclip configuration with sixteen banked turns. It was the site of numerous Grand National (now Sprint) series stock car races. It closed in 1958 because of noise complaints from local residents, and the 4th of July race was moved to the newly opened Daytona, Florida, International Speedway. The track was demolished in 1967. |
