Notes |
John Oglesby Winston "Captain Jack" Gravely (1862-1932) played a major role in the growth of the brightleaf tobacco market in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. This milder and more aromatic strain of tobacco became popular in the late nineteenth century, and grew well in the sandy soil of the North Carolina Piedmont. Gravely established brightleaf product sales in Japan in 1895, and was a joint founder of the China America Tobacco Company in 1918. |
