Notes |
Nags Head is a summer beach community on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The image of a horse with a lantern around its neck alludes to one possible origin of the community's name. "Wreckers" who hoped to plunder shipwrecked vessels, would, according to legend, attempt to lure ships onto the sand bars by leading a mule with a lamp hung around its neck up and down the beach at night, giving the illusion that another ship was safely cruising much closer to shore. Two other possible origins of the name Nags Head may be Nag's Head Island located in the Thames River in England, or a natural rock formation resembling a horse on St. Agnes, one of the Scilly Islands off the southwestern tip of England. |
