Notes |
James Walker Tufts (1835-1902), a successful Boston businessman, made his fortune by owning a chain of drug stores and by selling soda fountain supplies and equipment. Beginning in 1895, Tufts purchased 5,800 acres of logged-over forest in south central North Carolina with the intention to build a rustic health resort for the middle class. It was his hope that the new rural community, provided with numerous outdoor sporting activities, would offer a place for those suffering from tuberculosis and other health problems brought on by life in congested urban areas to convalesce. Tufts hired Frederick Law Olmsted, landscape designer of New York City's Central Park and the Biltmore House estate near Asheville, NC, to design the landscape of the community, which came to be called Pinehurst. The Holly Inn, the first hotel built in Pinehurst, opened on New Year's Eve of 1895. The first golf course was added three years later. In 1900 Tufts hired Donald J. Ross, who designed and built four golf courses at Pinehurst. The success of these courses resulted in Pinehurst becoming a popular golfing destination. |
